When you think of Merida, you might visualize a colorful city with lots of local eateries and a beautiful historic center. While this is true, it’s also just one hour away from a popular beach town called Progreso.

If you’re visiting Yucatán and wondering whether is worth adding to your itinerary, this Progreso Mexico travel guide, we’ll tell you everything you need to know before visiting to help you decide: the best things to do in Progreso, how to get there, why it’s worth a visit, and what to expect once you arrive.

What is Progreso?

Maybe the most important question. Progreso is a town in Yucatan directly at the beach, located on the shores of the gulf of Mexico. There is not a lot of things to do but it has some interesting history.

One fun fact is that the asteroid that killed the dinosaurs hit just a few kilometers away. Progreso is actually located inside the crater, which we found fascinating. You can learn more about this at the Museo del Meteorito, a museum right on the Malecón.

How to get to Progreso from Merida

From Merida you have 3 main ways to reach Progreso:

1. Most comfortable way is directly with an uber. This will cost around 300-400 pesos for a 4 people normal sized car. This price is for one way and it will take around 45 minutes. Make sure to double check on the way back that uber is also available in Progeso back to Merida.

2. Second best option is a bus leaving from the history centre. It will costs 27 pesos per person, one way. Kids also pay this price. Its pretty comfortable too, but takes a little longer, 1 hour. And makes some stops on the way. There is no toilet on the bus and it can get pretty crowded. Luckily there was airco which is a must in this part of Mexico. Buses leaves every 15 minutes and tickets cannot be bought in advance or with card, so bring cash. The company is called: progesogo and its located here.

3. Another option is renting a car. Obviously added convenience because you can go wherever you want, but comes with a price… Actual prices vary but expect to pay around 1000 pesos for one day. This will most likely include a baby seat if you ask upfront. We always book with Sunnycars because they are very trustworthy, really good customer service is something happens, and best of all: no hidden costs. If you rent locally there is a high change of added taxes or insurances that you HAVE TO pay according to their policy. 

Best Time to Visit Progreso

The best time to visit Progreso is during the dry season from November to April, when the weather is warm, less humid, and there is very little rain. These months are perfect for walking along the Malecón, relaxing at the beach, and exploring the town without the intense summer heat.

December to March is the busiest period, with more visitors and cruise ships arriving, especially on weekends. If you don’t mind a livelier atmosphere, this is a great time to go.

The summer months (May to September) are much hotter and more humid, but they are also quieter and cheaper. If you visit then, it’s best to go early in the day or later in the afternoon.

Best things to do in Progreso.

1. Walk along the Malecon.

Most of the best activities in Progreso are located along the Malecón, that’s how the beach boulevard is called. It’s very walkable and full of lots of seafood restaurants, beach clubs, and places to r lay down a towel on the white sand of the beach.

Most things to do in Progreso are attached to the Malecon so you never have to walk very far.

2. Visit the ‘Museo del Meteorito’.

This very interesting museum is one of the most unique and educational and kids will love it too! Its all about dinosaurs and the meteor that struck the gulf of mexico millions of years ago. It has a lot of animatronic dinosaurs and interactive exhibitions. While not the biggest museum its fun to spend an hour or 2 here. Entree prices are 350 pesos for foreigners and 150 pesos for kids. Its located right in the middle of the boulevard.

3. Snap a photo of the longest dock in the world.

Progreso has the biggest dock for cruise ships in the world, and you can see how far it stretches from mostly the whole beach. Its 8019 meters long and will take you 20 minutes if you were to take a shuttle the entire length. While the dock is not the most beautiful (its just a concrete bridge) its nice to just take a picture of it while sunbathing.

4. Sunbathing at the various beaches.

Progreso is located on a stretch of beach that runs for 10 km. Thats why there are a lot of beaches to choose from. If you come with kids we recommend just staying in the main one near the centre. Its quite a hassle to go to the other ones and they all look similar.

Be aware of all the hawkers at this particular beach. We have not experienced this much people trying to sell us something while in mexico before, and this is hugely because its the most populair beach of progreso.

5. Eat a ‘Marquesita’ at sunset.

If the kids are craving something sweet then buying a marauesita is your best bet. Its like a frech crepe but crunchy, and filled with sweet stuff. You can choose for example for a banana/nutella flavour, or strawberry/syrup. There a lots of options. Marquesitas are traditional snacks from the Yucatan area and are not common in other parts of Mexico. This way you get to explore the local culture a little too.

How Long Do You Actually Need in Progreso?

For most travelers, half a day is more than enough to enjoy Progreso. Many people visit as a day trip from Mérida, spend a few hours at the beach, walk along the Malecón, grab lunch, and head back in the afternoon. This makes Progreso an easy and low-effort addition to your itinerary.

That said, if you prefer a slower pace or are traveling with kids, staying a full day can be nice too. There’s no pressure to rush, and everything is close together, which makes Progreso feel calm and easy, especially compared to busier beach destinations in Mexico.

Is Progreso worth visiting?

We think Progreso is worth visiting, especially if you’re staying in Mérida and want an easy beach day without traveling far. While there aren’t endless attractions, the relaxed vibe, walkable Malecón, and simple beach life make it a nice break from the city.

For families, couples, or travelers short on time, many of the best things to do in Progreso, Mexico are simple: spending time at the beach, eating local food, and enjoying the seaside views. Combined with unique spots like the Museo del Meteorito, Progreso offers a calm and stress-free addition to any Yucatán itinerary.
