A Guide to the Best Digital Nomad Cafes in Merida

Sometimes when traveling it’s nice to take it easy and just sit back and relax. Local coffee shops are perfect for this. Luckily in Mexico and especially in Merida, there are lots of nice places to unwind, but finding one perfect for remote work can be tough. In this guide, we reveal our top 4 spots to sit down and do some work.

As digital nomads we looked for: good WiFi, air conditioning, affordability, and accessibility. We also tried to find ‘hidden’ spots, so they would also be quiet enough to get some work done.

Pan y Koffeee: A Work-Friendly Coffee Shop

What immediately stood out as soon as we arrived is how work friendly this café is. Theres more than 20 tables in two different floors and you have different options to choose from: you can sit by the windows that face the outside street, or next to a small garden at the back. Outlets are available at almost every table.

This cafe has an industrial design but with a cozy and calm atmosphere. There is a lot of natural light coming in, and the music is playing at a low volume, mostly ‘elevator music’.

WiFi works very good. Our test showed a 91 mbps result, which is more than enough for normal work or video calls. The AC is set to 21°C, but because the ceilings are high, the air will not blow directly on you. Which makes the temperature comfortable everywhere in the café.

The drink section is actually not huge, but you can get basic hot and cold coffee. Just not frappe. For me the food is the best part about this place, they have so many different options of freshly baked pastries and a wide breakfast menu. You should definitely try the ‘cesto’ which is their huge version of the classic Portuguese dessert called “pastel de nata”.

Just one big drawback: The café closes quite early, usually at 1 or 2 PM depending on the day of the week, so its really more a breakfast place and not suited if you want to stay there the whole day.

Who is this café for?

Early bird’s that look for a place to have lots of good breakfast options with fresh baked pastries and coffee. But anyone who needs a quiet place in the morning will enjoy it.

Sempere libros y café

Perfect if you want to really disconnect and read something while enjoying a nice cup of coffee (or juice) in between working hours. This café is small and cozy, and when you walk in you are greeted with lots of books (mostly spanish) that you can just pick from the walls like a library. Walk just a little further to the right and you will see the actual café. It has around 10 tables where 4 of which have outlets to connect.

WiFi is quick, around 70 Mbp/s. Which is plenty of speed for most work-related tasks and much quicker than most hotels.

The AC is great too. Set to 25 degrees which is perfect for Merida weather.

The menu is not the biggest, but has a lot of nice drink options like specialty coffee (lemon coldbrew with bubbles) and kombucha. Food options are limited which was the mayor drawback of this place. We ordered a avocado toast, which was ok.

The other thing is that compared to the rest of this list, it does not have the best atmosphere and can come over as quite dull. But if you mainly plan to visit to work or read a book, this can actually be a good thing. For a truly focused session near the Plaza Grande, this is one of the top Merida remote work spots.

For who is this café?

If you are looking for a place near the Plaza Grande to really focus without much distractions (unless you love books, in that case there are plenty distractions :)), this is your best bet. Music was not too loud, but noticeable. So we think that this café would not be ideal for video calls. For that, keep reading to find the clear winner in this category.

LAGALÁ 56:426: Cafe Near Paseo de Montejo

If you know us by know you also know that we like to be surrounded by nature. That’s why when we saw ‘Te Extraño, Extraño’, we knew we had to check it out! Located near the beginning of Paseo de Montejo, it’s very conveniently located if you are stayin in the main tourist areas of Merida. It’s in the back of a building called LAGALÁ 56:426.

Te Extraño, Extraño is one of the more popular places, but don’t let that scare you; when we were there there were only 3 of the 10 tables taken and plenty of outlets left.

What we liked was the outside seating area. It feels very refreshing to sit outside while still have the feeling of a privacy and coziness. Due to the café being mainly outside, there is no air conditioning. Which can be a deal-breaker if you are visiting in the summer. For us however, it was not too warm. The garden is full of trees and plants to give natural shadow and you are surrounded by tall walls making the overall climate feel pretty nice.

It’s on the expensive side though, which is understandable given the location. The music can also get loud sometimes, which is not ideal for videocalls. Good noise canceling headphones can block out the music easily.

For who is this café?

I think this café is perfect for somebody that is staying close to Paseo de Montejo and that is looking for a place to have lunch/breakfast (their menu is very extensive) while also getting some smaller tasks done. WiFi is decent (28 Mbs/s).

María & Montejo: Merida Cafe with the Fastest WiFi

We end this list with the winner in our opinion. María & Montejo has it all. Incredibly fast WiFi (and we mean really really fast) 255Mbs/s when we did our test. 

Next to that, the architecture stands out a lot. It’s a mix of minimalistic earth tones with nature influences. They even have a small little garden with real plants inside of the café! This gives out a calm vibe where you forget you are place, and more inside of a natural spa.

Prices are a little cheaper than the other places and its pretty quiet, since it’s just a little outside the touristy area’s. Its located one block away from Paseo de Montejo, so if you’re hotel is near the Grand Plaza it will take you 30 minutes to reach it by foot. Luckily Uber works in Merida too.

The only big downside of this place is the opening times. Until 16:00, which is really early compared to other places we have been. Normally we like to sometimes stay until dinnertime so we can either eat our dinner where we did our work, or go straight to a restaurant nearby. But this is not possible in this café.

For who is this café?

Ideal for every kind of worker. You can really zone in. Even videocalls are very doable in this place since the music is calm and pretty low volume, AC is set to a comfortable 25 degrees. And there are around 10 tables, 5 of them with outlets.
