Bad news first: Mexico has a reputation for not being the safest place in the world. And that's not for nothing. Some place you should really try to avoid, even as tourist. But this is the case in most countries. Petty crimes are common, but nothing to write home about. Basic caution is recommended.

That being said: We personally never felt unsafe in Mexico as a family. Especially if you stick to the places we recommend in our guide chances are you'll be totally fine. In fact, we felt more safe in Mexico than we did in the USA! You'll quickly notice that the bad reputation disappears before your eyes when lying on a white sand beach somewhere.

Mexico is one of the easiest countries to travel in general with young children. In some countries its a bit of a struggle to find afforable, comfortable and convient ways of transportation, but thats not the case in Mexico.

There is a country wide bus service called ADO that offers affordable long-distance travel options ranging from economy to platinum class.

Next to that they have recently opened a train network called 'Tren Maya', although this is only for the eastern part of the country.

To do a roadtrip in Mexico is also very convienent. The roads are in good condition and renting a car is very easy too.
Taxi's are available in by the dozens and apps like Uber and Indrive also work fine.

To our surprise Mexico is not that cheap as we first thought. Now, we are proud budget travelers, and we try to spend no more than €100 per day.  This is getting almost impossible in Mexico these days for a family of three.

Yes, you can find streetfood for under €4 and hotels for €40. If you're used to travel on a budget you might be able experience Mexico for around €60-70 per day/per person. However, this is not very comfortable to be honest.

However: If you are however used to a bit of luxory on your travels than Mexico can give you all that for a a very decent price, we would say around 30% cheaper then you would pay in Europe.

No, you don't need to apply for a visa to come to Mexico. They are one of those country's that are very generous in their visa-on-arrivals. As a european you'll get 180 days to explore this country, which is plenty of time!

Make sure to keep your physical proof-of-enty ticket. As you might need it later during your stay, or when leaving Mexico.

No, the tap water is unsafe to drink anywhere in Mexico. Locals buy plastic bottles, or have a filtration system in their home. Luckily there are ways to limit the purchases of plastic bottles for us travelers by:

  • Ordering a glass of water in a restaurant, which is free of charge most of the times.
  • You can bring a tapfilter like ours to drink safely from the tap or fill your bottle in your hotel.

Yes, a minimum of 10% tip in Mexico is common in restaurants. It is not as wide spread as in the USA, so you don't have to tip your local taxi or bus driver. But in restaurants it is expected, even is the service is not as good as you hoped people still leave a tip.

Traveling to Mexico

Mexico is a vibrant, sun-drenched country in North America, bordered by the Pacific and the Caribbean. Across its diverse states, history and nature take center stage—making it a surprisingly easy destination to explore with kids in tow. From the salty breeze on your face as you drive along stunning turquoise beaches and rugged desert coastlines to the warm mist rising from jungle cenotes, Mexico is the kind of place where both adults and children stay curious and engaged.

Hop between colorful colonial towns or go on a family-friendly road trip through the Yucatán Peninsula to discover ancient Mayan ruins (that feel like real-life history lessons), steaming street food stalls, dramatic canyons, white-sand beaches, and lush tropical jungles. Out on the water, the deep blue is home to whale sharks, sea turtles, and vibrant coral reefs—experiences that feel especially magical when seen through a child’s eyes. All of this makes a vacation in Mexico ideal for families who want culture, adventure, and moments that kids will talk about long after the trip ends.

Mexico is one of the most family-friendly countries we’ve traveled to. The culture is incredibly welcoming toward children, and you’ll often find locals going out of their way to help families. Restaurants are relaxed, kids are included everywhere, and it’s common to see multi-generational families traveling together. Destinations like the Riviera Maya, Yucatán, and Oaxaca offer a great mix of short travel distances, kid-friendly attractions, and comfortable accommodations.

Cenotes are a highlight for families—many have shallow entry points and calm water perfect for confident swimmers, while others offer life jackets. Mayan ruins like Chichén Itzá or Uxmal spark curiosity in kids, especially when paired with a guide who knows how to bring history to life. Mexico is also well set up for families in terms of amenities, medical care in tourist areas, and activities that balance adventure with downtime.

Best Time to Visit Mexico (As a Family)

Planning your perfect Mexico trip with kids? Choosing the right season can make all the difference for energy levels, weather comfort, and crowds.

Spring (March – May): Warm, dry, and bright, spring is a fantastic time to explore ruins and outdoor attractions before the intense summer heat arrives. It’s ideal for families who want to be active without overheating, and crowds begin to thin after winter.

Summer (June – September): Mexico’s rainy season brings lush landscapes and warmer temperatures (28–32°C). While afternoons often include showers, mornings are usually clear—perfect for cenotes and beach time. This season works well if you’re traveling with kids who love swimming, though keep hurricane season in mind on the coasts.

Fall (October – November): Mild temperatures, fewer visitors, and cultural festivals make fall one of the best times to visit with kids. Day of the Dead celebrations are colorful and meaningful without being overwhelming, and the jungles are beautifully green.

Winter (December – February): Dry, sunny, and pleasant, winter is peak season in Mexico. It’s ideal for escaping cold northern winters, though popular family destinations can be busy, especially around holidays.

We visited at the end of October, and it was stunning. The average daily temperature was around 25°C—perfect for exploring with kids without constant heat complaints. We had sunny days and enough flexibility to enjoy cultural sites and pool time. We were just a little early for the full Day of the Dead festivities, which would have been an unforgettable experience for children.

Coastlines and Beaches

The coastlines of Mexico are diverse and breathtaking, shaped by both the Pacific and the Caribbean. For families, this means endless options—from calm, shallow beaches ideal for younger kids to dramatic coastal scenery that keeps older children entertained for hours.

Top Tip: Many viewpoints along the Pacific coast offer sweeping views of deep blue water, migrating whales, and powerful waves—great stops for quick breaks when road-tripping with kids.

The Caribbean coast is especially family-friendly, with powdery white sand and calm, clear water. Beaches in the Riviera Maya, such as Playa Paraíso, are perfect for little ones, while hidden lagoons and seaside ruins add adventure without long hikes. These easy-access natural wonders make beach days both relaxing and exciting on a family vacation in Mexico.

Food, Culture, and Religion in Mexico

Mexican food is bold, fresh, and deeply connected to regional traditions—yet surprisingly adaptable for kids. Alongside complex dishes like Oaxaca’s famous moles, you’ll find simple options like quesadillas, grilled meats, rice, fresh fruit, and pastries that even picky eaters enjoy. Street food stalls are everywhere, making it easy to grab a quick, affordable meal when kids get hungry.

Culturally, Mexico is deeply family-oriented. Festivals, music, and shared meals are central to daily life, and children are welcomed everywhere. Catholic traditions influence many celebrations, from colorful church festivals to major holidays, which kids often find fascinating rather than intimidating. The lively atmosphere makes learning about culture feel natural and fun.

Why You Should Travel to Mexico (As a Family)

With jungles, beaches, cenotes, and deserts all within relatively short distances, Mexico is perfect for families who want variety without constant long travel days. You can swim in underground rivers one day, explore ancient ruins the next, and relax by the ocean after that—all without exhausting young travelers.

Some of the best family-friendly activities in the Yucatán include snorkeling with turtles, visiting pyramids, floating through cenotes, and spotting wildlife. After busy days, it’s easy to slow down with a hammock, a pool, or a beachfront dinner while kids play nearby. Each region offers a different rhythm, allowing families to tailor their trip to their children’s ages and interests.

Beyond the landscapes, Mexico’s warmth truly stands out. The hospitality, patience with children, and relaxed approach to life make traveling with kids feel easier and more enjoyable. It’s a destination that delivers adventure without sacrificing comfort—something every traveling family appreciates.

Safety and Travel Advice in Mexico (With Kids)

Traveling to Mexico with children is safe and rewarding when you take standard precautions. Here are key tips for families:

  • Strong Sun: The sun can be intense, especially for kids. Use reef-safe sunscreen, hats, rash guards, and keep water bottles handy.

  • Water Safety: Stick to bottled or filtered water for drinking and brushing teeth. Teach kids not to swallow water while swimming in cenotes or pools.

  • Eco-Respect: Many natural sites are protected. Kids should avoid touching coral, ruins, or wildlife, and only use approved sunscreens in cenotes.

  • Ocean Conditions: Always swim at supervised beaches and watch flag warnings—especially important with children.

  • Natural Disasters: Earthquakes and hurricanes occur seasonally, but hotels and resorts are well prepared. Review emergency procedures upon arrival.

  • Street Food Safety: Choose busy stalls with cooked food. Freshly made tacos are often safer than they look—and a hit with kids.

  • Traffic: Roads vary greatly. Avoid night driving in rural areas due to livestock and speed bumps.

  • Crime and Safety: Tourist areas are generally safe, but keep an eye on belongings and teach kids basic awareness.

  • Travel Insurance: Essential when traveling with kids. It covers medical care, lost luggage, and unexpected changes—peace of mind every parent needs.
